Background Check Process & FAQ
The Employment Verification and Background Checks policy applies to hires made through regular recruitment procedures or through waiver or exception. Covered positions include those with full-time or part-time regular employment, whether it is continuous or term, and in the following categories:
- Contract (K base)
- Faculty (A or B base)
- Merit (E or H base)
- Professional & Scientific (P base)
Criminal History Investigation and Credit History Investigation
University Human Resources (UHR) consultants will review criminal background and credit checks. A credit history investigation will only be done as indicated by the policy. A criminal conviction or negative credit history is not an automatic bar to employment. If the investigation results in negative information that could impact the hiring decision, UHR consultants will initiate all required contact with the applicant. The Vice President for UHR, or his or her designee will consult with personnel within department, college, or administration, and make a recommendation regarding the hire to the department.
Employing units will recommend the type of background check needed and based on the recommendation, University Human Resources will determine the appropriate package from the list below.

*Additional frees may be assessed by states, counties, and/or country for Criminal Felony and Misdemeanor searches.
How long will the background check take?
Average turn-around time is three to five business days after the applicant responds to an Elink invitation via email. However, the length of time will vary based on factors such as the amount of time it takes for the applicant to respond, the country or number of U.S. counties in which someone has lived, the availability of electronic information versus an investigator having to get the information in person, and the accuracy of the applicant information provided.
Who reviews the background check?
UHR reviews all criminal background and credit checks.
How will the hiring department know when a background check is complete?
You will know the background check is complete when UHR approves the hire. The hire approval will trigger a system generated email notification to the department.
New hires should not begin employment until the hire has been approved by UHR Talent Acquisition.
